Last night, I began a new ritual for 2011 - Saturday Night Classic Movies. Using the AFI Top 100 List as a guide, I have decided to try and see all 100 classic films this year...or at least the ones I hadn't seen yet. I'm starting with the original list and will then go to the updated one once that is competed.
First classic of the year - Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
I liked it. Of course, since it's a classic, if I didn't like it do you think I would really admit to it? Honestly, it wasn't my favorite movie. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen either. Overall, I enjoyed it. It had good dialogue and action. I can see traces of The Princess Bride in it, and I think that's a tribute to the writer. I think some of the filmmaking choices, like the long photographic montages were probably where it lost me from time to time. Those seem to drag a bit. But I can see why it is considered one of the greatest films of all time.
Modern classic - Amelie
It's not on the AFI list, but I watched it last night, too. I adored it. It was clever and sweet without being too cloying. It may be one of my new favorite films. Too bad so few romantic comedies can come close to even beginning to match how lovely this film is.
